Linking items together
Linking items together
Linking items connects related pieces of work across MonsterOps so context flows with the item. A To-do linked to a Rock, a Rock linked to an Objective, or a News item linked to an Issue — each link helps anyone viewing the item jump straight to the work that supports it.
What you can link
Most items can be linked to other items, grouped by category in the link picker:
- Objective
- News
- Rock
- To-do
- KPI
- Issue
You can link items across different categories — for example, attaching a Rock and a few To-dos to the same News item — and most item types let you link several at once.
How to link an item
Linking is done from the item's create or edit view.
- Open the item you want to add a link from, either by creating a new one or editing an existing one.
- Find the link dropdown menu.
- Browse the available items, grouped by category, or search for a specific one.
- Select the item you want to link. The link is added immediately.
- Save the item.
How to unlink an item
Unlinking uses the same flow as linking — selecting an already-linked item toggles the link off.
- Open the item in edit view.
- Open the link dropdown menu.
- Select the linked item again to remove the link.
- Save the item.
Linking a Rock to an Objective
Linking a Rock to an Objective is a special case worth calling out. When the link is in place:
- The Rock's progress contributes automatically to the Objective's overall progress.
- Anyone viewing the Objective can see which Rocks are driving it forward.
- The team's quarterly work stays connected to longer-horizon company goals.
This is the most structural link in MonsterOps — other links are primarily navigational, but the Rock-to-Objective link drives actual progress calculation.
Best practices
- Link a Rock to an Objective whenever it supports one. The Objective's progress depends on it.
- Link KPIs to Rocks when the metric measures the success of that priority.
- Link To-dos to the Rock, Issue, or News item they support, so it's clear what bigger piece of work the action belongs to.
- Don't over-link. A clear primary link is more useful than many tangential ones.
Things to keep in mind
- Anyone with access to a team can add or remove links on its items — including linking a Rock to an existing Objective. This is true even when the direct Objective actions (create, edit, archive, delete) are restricted to Owners and Admins.
- Links are added from the item's edit view, not from a separate linking screen.
- Selecting an already-linked item in the dropdown removes the link.
- Most links are navigational only — they help you jump between related items but don't change behavior. The exception is the Rock-to-Objective link, which contributes to Objective progress automatically, so Members can indirectly affect an Objective's percentage even if they can't edit the Objective itself.
